CS1000 Test Results: UL, ASTM E84 and SEFA 3

Independent test data for ChemShield CS1000 3/16" FRP fume hood liner board

Every CS1000 performance claim is backed by independent testing. This page summarizes the results your engineering and quality teams need to qualify CS1000 as a fume hood liner. Complete test reports are available on request.

UL Listing

CS1000 is UL Listed under UL File No. E550115. UL listing includes periodic follow-up inspections at the production facility, so the material you receive continues to match the material that was tested.

  • UL listing: UL File No. E550115

  • UL 94 flammability rating: V-0

ASTM E84 Surface Burning Characteristics

  • Flame spread index: 15

  • Smoke developed index: 250

  • Classification: Class A (flame spread 0 to 25)

  • Test laboratory: QAI Laboratories, August 2025

  • Ignition time (ASTM D229): 130 seconds

  • Burning time (ASTM D229): 600 seconds

Most fume hood specifications require a liner with an ASTM E84 flame spread of 25 or less. For more detail, see ASTM E84 Class A for fume hood liners, explained.

SEFA 3 Chemical Resistance

CS1000 was tested to SEFA 3 Work Surfaces, Section 2.1.1 Chemical/Stain Resistance, at Gaynes Labs in June 2025 (Job No. 25443). Forty-nine reagents were left on the panel for 24 hours at 73°F, either under an inverted bottle with a saturated cotton ball (volatile chemicals, Method A) or as five drops under a domed cover (non-volatile chemicals, Method B). Each spot was then washed, dried and rated under fluorescent light.

SEFA 3 allows no more than four Level 3 results for a laboratory-grade surface. CS1000 had three, and passed.

  • Level 0, no effect (no detectable change): 15 reagents

  • Level 1, excellent (slight change in color or gloss): 25 reagents

  • Level 2, good (clear change in color or gloss, no loss of function): 6 reagents

  • Level 3, fair (objectionable discoloration or etch): 3 reagents

Full SEFA 3 Results by Reagent

Level 0, no effect (15): Ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, ammonium hydroxide 28%, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl ether, formaldehyde 37%, gasoline, hydrochloric acid 37%, hydrogen peroxide 30%, naphthalene, sodium hydroxide flake, sulfuric acid 33%, toluene, zinc chloride (saturated).

Level 1, slight change in color (25): Amyl acetate, ethyl acetate, acetic acid 98%, acetone, acid dichromate 5%, butyl alcohol, cresol, dichloroacetic acid, dimethylformamide, dioxane, formic acid 90%, methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride, monochlorobenzene, nitric acid 20%, nitric acid 30%, nitric acid 70%, sodium hydroxide 10%, sodium hydroxide 20%, sodium hydroxide 40%, sodium sulfide (saturated), sulfuric acid 77%, sulfuric acid 96%, trichloroethylene, xylene.

Level 2, clear change (6):

  • Chloroform: clear change in color and gloss

  • Chromic acid 60%: clear change in color and gloss

  • Furfural: clear change in color

  • Tincture of iodine: clear change in color

  • Phenol 90%: clear change in color

  • Silver nitrate (saturated): clear change in color

Level 3, fair (3):

  • Hydrofluoric acid 48%: swelling

  • Phosphoric acid 85%: severe etching

  • Sulfuric acid 77% and nitric acid 70%, equal parts: severe etching

Hydrofluoric acid, concentrated phosphoric acid and mixed sulfuric/nitric acid are the chemistries to watch. Hoods that run them routinely are usually lined with polypropylene or stainless steel (see fume hood liner materials compared). Suitability depends on the chemicals in use, so confirm compatibility with the reagents your customers will handle.

  • Flexural strength (ASTM D790): 17,114 psi

  • Compressive strength, flatwise (ASTM D695): 27,300 psi

  • Impact strength (ASTM D256): 7.5 ft-lb/in

  • Specific gravity (ASTM D792): 1.81

  • Density: 0.063 lb/in³

  • Water absorption: 0.08%

  • Barcol hardness: 49
